Give Us This Day

It’s here again, the day we set aside to be thankful.  This year some of my friends are reeling with a loss of fortune, some are unemployed, some are sifting through the ashes of their home, still others are helping their friends and family say goodbye, as they struggle with diseases that will take their lives.   It is hard ground and maybe some of you are struggling with emotions that do not feel all that thankful.

About 13-14 years ago I went through some tough days. I was single, out of work with no prospects or direction and many of my friends had left the area for new jobs in Colorado.  The one thing that seemed to give me balance was a daily gratefulness list that I worked on.  It may seem cheesy, but it is was so easy to focus on what I had lost, or I didn’t have and relatively hard to remember the abundance I lived in. Mostly, it was something I could do everyday that reminded me, I would be okay and God had my back.  Some days it was hard to work on,  I remember once adding, “I am thankful for water.”  Realizing that without it, we perish.  Of course I live in the Pacific NW where water is plentiful, but regardless, I was grateful I did.  My goal was to have at least 30 items on my list everyday.

I am reminded that we each get “this day”.  God says do not borrow from tomorrow, but do what you can today and be glad.  Do not worry about what is too come, instead be grateful for the mercies and provision of this day.  Just live in this day, one day at a time. In these scriptures, God reminds us that Thanksgiving Day is supposed to be every day.

My hope for you this Thanksgiving is that you will not waste a drop of the 24 hours worrying, or being fearful, but will truly enter it with a thankful and hopeful heart in the true reason we are all still here taking in air.  God has something for us to do, he is not done perfecting us and using us for his glory–so give thanks and give praise.

So here is my 2008 thankfulness list, feel free to share yours with me.
